Mayor Mark Boughton

DANBURY — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn, joined Mayor Mark Boughton Saturday to thank and honor veterans at the city’s Farmers Market held in Kennedy Park.

“Without our veterans, we would never be as strong and free as we are today,” Blumenthal said. “They are the ones who enable us to be here, gather as we please, worship as we wish and speak as we would like — all those freedoms are due to our vets.”

Danbury Farmer's Market

DANBURY — The Farmers Market in Kennedy Park kicked off its seventh season Saturday with several changes designed to allow more customers a chance to buy locally grown vegetables, fruits, and even clams.
Peggy Zamore, who coordinates the market run by CityCenter Danbury, said that a $34,000 grant allows customers using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) to double the amount they can spend at the market.

“It’s important because there are a lot of people who get food stamps or SNAP and do want to eas healthy food and good local produce, but can’t usually afford it,” Zamore said. “We enable them to come to the market and afford to eat in a healthy way. We’re encouraging them to use their benefits for healthy food.”

DANBURY — CityCenter is set to launch an expanded farmers market downtown next month that will include more vendor offerings and live entertainment.

P.J. Prunty, the executive director of CityCenter, said the farmers market will also be changed from Friday to Saturday afternoons to give more local residents a chance to visit the venue.

“It’s always been a challenge for the downtown residents to make the farmers market on a Friday when they have to work,” Prunty said. “By changing it to Saturdays our hope is that we can expand the reach of the market and make it more accessible to people living along Main Street.”
